Matka silk

Matka silk is slightly more coarse than most types of silk. Due to the coarse weave, the silk falls less smoothly than linen, but certainly not as stiff as hemp. The silk has a subtle glimmer that deepens the shadow and light effect of the folds. This gives the Matka silk shroud a luxurious, but also natural look.

Making Matka silk

For Matka silk, the fabric fibres are obtained from the cocoons of wild silkworms. Shorter fibres are used than for smooth silk. Because the fabric is also woven by hand on traditional looms, a somewhat rougher texture is created. Matka silk therefore has a natural irregularity, which creates a fabric that radiates authenticity and character.

What is the best way to fold the shroud?

There are two ways to fold the shroud. Folding instructions are always included.

Can a shroud be used for cremation?

Yes, it is possible to use a shroud, in combination with a carrier, for cremation. Some crematoria require the use of a Cremation input board when the carrier doesn't have a flat bottom plate. Always contact the crematorium or the funeral director you are working with, to be sure what the requirements are.

Can a shroud be purchased now and be stored for a long time?

A shroud can be stored for years as long as it is kept in a dry, dark space. We recommend placing the shroud in a cotton cover or pillowcase. Make sure moths don't get access, as they can damage the silk fibers.
